The Internet Giant Google Search Engine has a perfect alternative called “DuckDuckGo” which is free/ secure and doesn’t track users’ search queries. Also, it doesn’t share search queries with ISP. On 1 July 2020, major telecom operators Jio Infocom, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea has blocked the DuckDuckGo Search Engine.

Reasons to Block DuckDuckGo Seach Engine in India

On 29 July 2020, Dept. of Telecommunication (DOT) has blacklisted and blocked 59 Mobile App. In these App major apps developers company were of China. Due to the security season, DOT has used section 69A to ban such sites and apps.

Reason 1: There is no search history stored for you as a user.
Reason 2: If governments or institutions like the police, request data about you from DuckDuckGo, there is no data to be shared with them.
Reason 3: It prevents search leakage

A major blow to TikTok, Likee, Helo, CamScanner, MI, Club Factory, Shareit, Xender, Kwai and other apps which has more than 5 Billions App download. As per the Global Times, the parent company ByteDance of Tik Tok could loss of as high as $6 billion after the Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps including #TikTok in a Tweet.

Complaints by DuckDuckGo Users

The users of the DuckDuckGo Search Engine were found reporting the issue on Twitter at 6 PM onwards. They were not happy to block the Search Engine.

Thanks! Colleagues (Divyank, Kushagra) and I ran some tests from Bangalore and Delhi. Confirmed that @DuckDuckGo
is being blocked by multiple ISPs in India, including: Vodafone 4G (HTTP HOST-based) Airtel 4G (DNS-based, SNI-based) Jio 4G (SNI-based) ACT not blocking it yet.

Step 1: Go to Settings → Network & internet → Advanced → Private DNS.

Step 2: Select the Private DNS provider hostname option.

Step 3: Enter 1.1.1.1 or one.one.one.one or 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com and hit Save.

Step 4: Visit 1.1.1.1/help to verify DNS over TLS is enabled.
