It as an autonomous organization by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. National Institute of Open Schooling is the largest open schooling system in the world. About 5000 study centers of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) spread all over the world.
About 350,000 students annually enrolled with NIOS which makes it the largest open schooling system in the world.It offers general and academic courses equivalent to class 10 and class 12 Vocational Education Programmes is also provided by the National Institute of Open Schooling.
NIOS also gives an option of dual enrolment. Students can freely give their exa during the period of March-April or October-November or students can also choose to opt for On-Demand Examinations by choosing his or her desired exam date.

About NIOS: NIOS is known as National Institute of open schooling. NIOS conducts board examination twice in a year i.e. October and March.
As stated above, NIOS has various courses to offer at different levels. For instance,

NIOS offers two modes of exams:
Public examinations
- These exams are open to all students enrolled in NIOS.
- These exams are conducted twice every year ( In April-March and October-November).
On-demand examinations (ODES)
- NIOS offers the opportunity for the student to choose the desired day for appearing in exam.
- For this facility, they have to enroll with the ODES System.

Age:
- For Secondary Education: Candidate must be at least 14 years old.
- For Senior Secondary Course: Candidates must be 15 at least years old.
Minimum educational qualification
- For secondary education- Required Passing certificate till class 7.
- For senior secondary education -required Certificate of secondary examination passed by a recognized board of secondary education.
