Kim, 36, died after having a cardiovascular procedure, the party said. His sister Kim Yo-jong, 31, has been announced as the leader of North Korean. Kim Yo-jong is the youngest daughter of former supreme leader Kim Jong-il.
US intelligence says it has information that Kim died of coronavirus and had implications which necessitated a heart surgery.
Kim was last seen at a government meeting on April 11 and was mysteriously absent from the celebration of his late grandfather Kim Il-Sung’s birthday on April 15.
Kim Jong-un was the Supreme Leader of North Korea since 2011 and chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea since 2012. He was the second child of Kim Jong-il, who was North Korea’s second leader from 1994 to 2011, and Ko Yong-hui.
